Stress Relief Technique #8: Do Something for Others (Post #23)

A Simple Way to Regain Balance Before Breaking Down

Sometimes, the stress we carry feels so heavy, it’s like we’re right at the edge of a breakdown. Our thoughts spiral. Our problems feel endless. Our hearts and minds race with what-ifs and worst-case scenarios. And in those moments, the last thing we want to hear is “go help someone else.” But sometimes, that’s exactly what we need to do.

Helping others is more than just kindness — it’s a powerful coping strategy.
It shifts our focus away from ourselves, especially when our inner world is falling apart. When we help someone else — whether we hold the door open, offer a kind word, or assist a friend with a task — we interrupt the negative cycle spinning in our heads.

Even something small can create a much-needed mental pause. That pause gives us space to breathe, to regain composure, and to remind ourselves: we're not alone.

But let’s be clear — this strategy is meant to help you get back on your feet, not become a long-term avoidance pattern.

Too many people fall into the trap of constantly giving to others while completely abandoning themselves.
They start saying:

  • “I’m too busy helping everyone else.”
  • “I don’t have time for myself.”
  • “Maybe if I just keep helping, I’ll feel better.”

It’s admirable to be compassionate. But over-giving can quickly lead to resentment, burnout, and lost progress. Before long, you’ll be so far removed from your goals and needs, the stress you tried to escape will come back even stronger.

So, what’s the key? Balance.

  • Use this strategy as a temporary reset.
  • Do something small and intentional.
  • Then return to yourself.

You don’t have to become a saint or take on the world’s problems. Instead, try something like:

  • Picking up a small mess that isn’t yours
  • Giving someone an unexpected, genuine compliment
  • Letting someone go ahead of you in line
  • Sending a supportive text to a friend

Simple acts. Big impact.

Let it serve its purpose: to ground you. Once you feel stable again, gently shift your focus back to your own needs and goals. That’s where your long-term healing lives.

You deserve to feel good again — and sometimes helping someone else is the first step toward helping yourself.
