Coping Strategy #2: Distract Yourself! (Post #30)

Sometimes the best way to handle overwhelming feelings is to step away — not forever, just long enough to let the storm inside calm down. That’s where the coping strategy of Distraction comes in.

Why It Works

When emotions are running high, trying to solve the problem in the heat of the moment can make things worse. By distracting yourself, you give your body and mind the space to cool off before returning to the situation with clarity and control.

Think of it like hitting a “pause” button — not to ignore the issue, but to prevent it from escalating.

Healthy Ways to Distract Yourself

When tension rises, choose an outlet that brings temporary relief without making the situation worse:

  • Go for a walk
  • Call a trusted friend (or two or three!)
  • Cook a meal
  • Read a book
  • Do arts and crafts
  • Watch a show or listen to music

The key is to choose what works for you — something that eases your emotions and gives you time to reset.

The Two Biggest Pitfalls

While distraction is a powerful short-term tool, it can become harmful if used the wrong way.

  1. Using alcohol or drugs as a distraction
These substances can feel like they “work” because they provide physical pleasure and a temporary escape. But the danger is real: they can become so enjoyable that people never come back to resolve their problems, sometimes avoiding them for years. That avoidance only creates bigger pain.
  2. Waiting too long to return
Distraction only works when you circle back to resolve the situation. If you wait too long, guilt and shame begin to fester, making it harder to face the issue later. The longer you avoid, the heavier the burden becomes.

Use It Wisely

Distraction is a great tool to get through a crisis and cool down strong emotions. But remember — it’s meant to be short-term. Once you’re calm and collected, come back to resolve what triggered you in the first place.

Using this skill wisely not only prevents unnecessary damage but also helps you manage life’s downs in healthier ways.

That’s how you build Resilience.
That’s how you grow in Confidence.
And never forget — you’re already Beautiful.
