Cognitive Distortion # 11 - Blocking What’s Shocking

(Why Not Accepting Keeps You Stuck)

There’s a cognitive distortion that quietly keeps people trapped in the past.
I like to call it “Blocking What’s Shocking.”

It’s the refusal to accept what has already happened.

Not because people are weak — but because some moments are painful, unfair, embarrassing, or heartbreaking. And accepting them feels like admitting defeat.

But here’s the truth: not accepting reality doesn’t protect you — it freezes you.

What Does “Not Accepting” Look Like?

It often sounds like this:

  • “I shouldn’t have had any part in that fight.”
  • “They weren’t supposed to leave me.”
  • “I can’t believe I ruined that opportunity.”
  • “That loss never should have happened.”
  • “I wish I could erase that part of my past.”

When we get stuck here, we replay moments over and over — wishing they were different — instead of dealing with what actually is.

And that’s where the danger lives.

Why This Distortion Is So Harmful

When you refuse to accept what’s already happened:

  • You stay stuck in the past instead of growing forward
  • You miss new opportunities because you’re grieving old ones
  • You block new love because you’re clinging to old attachments
  • You carry guilt, shame, and regret that were never meant to be permanent

The more you resist reality, the more power it has over you.

And the longer you stay there, the harder it feels to move.

Acceptance Is Not Approval

Let’s be clear:
Acceptance does NOT mean you liked it.
Acceptance does NOT mean it was fair.
Acceptance does NOT mean it didn’t hurt.

Acceptance simply means saying:

“Yes, this happened. I don’t like it. I wish it didn’t happen.
But it did — and now my next step matters.”

That’s where freedom begins.

How Do You Break the Cycle?

You start by facing facts — gently, honestly, and without punishment.

  • Forgive yourself for not having the tools back then
  • Stop asking “Why did this happen to me?”
  • Start asking “What can I do now?”

Shift your focus from what was done to you
to what you can do for yourself next.

It takes practice.
It takes patience.
But every time you do it, you reclaim a little more of your power.

Why This Matters

When you accept reality:

  • You free up mental space
  • You regain control of your direction
  • You stop reliving pain that’s already passed

And with each step forward:

  • You build confidence
  • You strengthen resilience
  • You honor the fact that you’re already beautiful

Not because life was easy —
but because you chose to move forward anyway.

Reflection Question:
What’s one moment you’ve been struggling to accept — and what’s one small action you could take today to move forward?
